Full contemporary leather binding with gilt lettering and line decoration to spine, gilt line decoration to boards, spine divided into 5 compartments, brown sprinkled edges. Epigram from Tacitus’s Agricola printed on title page (in French). Binding bumped and worn, particularly at the extremities, pages slightly browned, very slightly foxed. Ex library, but with only one faded stamp on title page and library shelfmark sticker (slightly torn) to heel. Inscribed by the author’s grandson as a gift from the latter to Alexandre Durand d’Ubraye, Governor General for Inde francaise in the Second French Colonial Empire (under Second French Empire under Napoleon III), inscription dated 1857. The book recounts the Indian campaign led by the French admiral Pierre André de Suffren (1729-1799) against the British fleet led by Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Hughes. The campaign is famous for the severity of the threat the French posed to British India. The major sea battles included Sadras, Providien, Negapatam, Trincomalee and Cuddalore. Text in French.
