Undated, though ca. 1880. First edition. 4to., rebound in attractive twentieth-century half leather with gilt ornamentation and gilt-lettered red leather label to spine, gilt page edges, pp. viii, 591 [+ 4 pp. of advertisements], with 50 colour lithographs after paintings by Ludlow, as required, plus additional colour lithograph after A. F. Lydon pasted into the back of the volume, before the advertisements. This lithograph bears the title ‘The Feathered World’ and was probably taken from the magazine of the same name founded at the end of the nineteenth century. Originally issued in parts from 1872, this is most renowned nineteenth-century book on poultry and poultry keeping. The oil lithograph plates are portraits of actual prize-winning birds (the frontispiece depicts Mr John Douglas’s black-breasted red game cock, ‘The Earl’, shown at Crystal Palace in 1870). Lewis Wright was editor of the Fanciers Gazette (later the Livestock Journal). There are two variants of the original edition. In the first the frontispiece is dated 1868. In what may be called the second impression the frontispiece is dated 1870. (Palmer, John. Poultry books: an annotated bibliography, 1990). This is the second impression of the first edition. Minimal wearing to label, rear board slightly marked, frontispiece and front endpaper beginning to crack, frontispiece, title page and rear pages worn and stained, some tissue guards present, others missing; otherwise very good, tight and clean.
