II only of title page and plates), all copper-engraved by the author with ample margins around the plates. A rare first edition (esp. rare for being complete with subscribers list in vol. Some fraying to the outer margin of p. 47 with no loss of text, binding a little bumped with some abrasion, some foxing to pages, otherwise a very good copy with all tissue guards present. Thomas Worlidge (1700-66) was an English painter and etcher who painted portraits of George II and David Garrick. Like his more famous contemporary Joshua Reynolds, he was a great admirer of Rembrandt (as suggested by the title of this book and the self-portrait, etched in the manner of Rembrandt, on the frontispiece), interest in whose work saw a revival among artists and collectors in eighteenth-century London.
