2 vols., 4to., contemporary full leather (red) with gilt ornamentation to boards, board edges and spine, gilt lettering to spine which is divided into six compartments, gilt page edges, pp. (prelims. inc. list of subscribers), 48 (catalogue text); with frontispiece self-portrait in vol. I, frontispiece of Medusa in vol. II, and 182 plates (vol. I consisting of text and plates, vol. II only of title page and plates), all copper-engraved by the author with ample margins around the plates. A rare first edition (esp. rare for being complete with subscribers list in vol. I) and a beautiful set of exquisite engravings taken from ancient gems, themselves depicting scenes and characters from Greek and Roman history and mythology. Some fraying to the outer margin of p. 47 with no loss of text, binding a little bumped with some abrasion, some foxing to pages, otherwise a very good copy with all tissue guards present. Thomas Worlidge (1700-66) was an English painter and etcher who painted portraits of George II and David Garrick. Like his more famous contemporary Joshua Reynolds, he was a great admirer of Rembrandt (as suggested by the title of this book and the self-portrait, etched in the manner of Rembrandt, on the frontispiece), interest in whose work saw a revival among artists and collectors in eighteenth-century London.
