1st edition, 1st impression published by Ward, Lock and Co. in April 1891. 8vo. 334pp. Publishers original paper-covered boards with Charles Ricketts’ legendary embossed gilt butterfly design. The typography of the half-title, title, and preface are all originals by Ricketts also. Skillfully rebacked with a modern vellum spine with gilt detailing, true in style to the original. Deckled edges – text block remains untrimmed. Internally near-fine. Minor foxing to preliminaries and a discrete, ink inscription on FFEP. Some mild bumping to boards’ bevelled edges. Additionally there is a very small amount of loss where the rear cover meets the spine, likely suffered prior to the re backing process [please see photos for detail]. A rare first edition, first impression with all the appropriate identifiers: thick, grey paper-covered and bevelled edge boards; no publishing history; typographic error at the beginning of page 208, line 23 (“nd” instead of “and” – this was corrected for the second edition published in 1891); publisher displayed as “Ward, Lock & Co. London, New York & Melbourne”, with no reference to “Bowden”, a name which appears in later editions; no publisher’s imprint or advertisements at the rear. An incredibly rare example of a true first edition of Wilde’s uncontested masterpiece. In excellent condition both inside and out.
