English-Gipsy Songs. In Rommany, with metrical English translations. By Charles G. Leland, Professor E. H. Palmer, and Janet Tuckey. London: Trubner & Co., 1875. 8vo. xii, 276 pp. First edition. Publisher’s blue cloth binding with gilt lettering and ornamentation to spine and front board, which is ornamented with stylized vertiginous text reading ‘English Gipsy Ballads’ against a background of a hanging cauldron and rural landscape. Ex library with usual markings including shelfmark handwritten in white pen to heel. Binding worn and rubbed with no loss of material. Deckle edges. Hinges tender. Some foxing to pages. Pages 81 and 85 dogeared. An extremely scarce book containing traditional English-Gipsy verses accompanied with English translations. English-Gipsy, a branch of Rommany, was already dying out when Leland and his co-authors compiled this anthology.
