8vo., publisher’s wrappers with title printed on front wrapper, wrappers in protective translucent cover, printed on Auvergne paper, edges deckle, ornamented throughout with gold-printed ornamentation and ornamental watermarks designed by Andree Karpeles, pp. [2 blank], 139, [4 blank]. Extremely scarce. 1 of 25 unnumbered copies printed on Auvergne paper. The edition was limited to 1,500 copies on standard paper, numbered from 1 to 1,500. In addition to this was a separate print run of 100 copies on Auvergne paper numbered I to C, of which 12 were each to contain a ‘luciole’ (‘firefly’) handwritten and signed by the author in Bengali and English. In addition to these was an even smaller print run of 25 copies, also on Auvergne paper, and unnumbered. This is an example of the latter, which also contains a tercet, in English, in Tagore’s hand, signed by Tagore in Bengali and English, and dated, ‘Shantiniketan, 2 October 1929’. The tercet reads, ‘My fancies are fireflies / Specks of living light / twinkling in the dark,’ which is the English translation of the book’s first tercet. ‘Lucioles’ (or ‘Fireflies’ in English), which was translated directly from the Bengali by Marguerite Ferte and Andree Karpeles, consists of 256 epigrams and short verses. It was published as ‘No.2’ of the ‘Feuilles de l’Inde’ series by Chitra. Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was a Bengali polymath and poet who in 1913 became the first non-European to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. The copy is heavily foxed due to the susceptibility of the Auvergne paper, and the hinges are a little tender; otherwise a very good copy. Text in French.
