The first of the two volumes is “Jazz”; a perfect facsimile of Matisse’s seminal cut-out work, containing 152 facsimile pages printed on 38 unbound, folded sheets with 102 illustrations. Printed on paper similar to the 1947 edition, this facsimile volume allows readers to experience “Jazz” in its original, unbound form. It has been printed in 18 colours on a small offset press, 4 pages at a time, to obtain the highest fidelity to the original. The second volume, “Cut-Outs: Drawing with Scissors” contains 334 pages (13 foldout) with 275 illustrations. It provides a thorough historical context to Matisse’s cut-outs, tracing their roots to his 1930 trip to Tahiti, all the way through to his final years in Nice. It goes on to consider other pivotal works from his later career, including his contributions to Verve magazine and his decoration of the Venice Chapel. Included are rare and historic photographs by Matisse taken in Tahiti, as well as photos of the artist himself by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Brassa?, and the filmmaker Murnau. A rare set to find, let alone in such good condition, and one of Taschen’s great achievements to-date.
