Ex-library. Complete with fifteen copper-engraved plates, including detailed architectural drawings and illustrations of medals on which appear Veronese amphitheatres. The engravings are in very good condition. Signs of bookworm visible on the reverse of the front and back boards and very minor bookworm damage throughout the volume. 1cm of text lost on pp. 245-48 due to bookworm. Minor loss of text (the first letter of 2 lines) in the margin of p. 245 where the fold-out illustration has been re-glued. The binding is still tight, except for monor tearing to the inner spine on pp. 290-91. Marquis Scipione Maffei was an erudite nobleman from Verona who wrote on a range of subjects. This is a rare example of Maffei’s treatise on the amphitheatres of Verona. The book is divided into two parts, one on the cultural history of the buildings, taking into account their function in ancient Roman life, the other on its architectural history.
