8vo., contemporary full leather binding with gilt labeling and ornamentation and raised bands to spine, red page edges, endbands, pp. , 285. Joints starting, erosion to spine. Otherwise an excellent copy. First and only edition of this very rare book opposing the adoption of the Spanish doubloon (doppia in Italian) as a form of coinage, declaring it ‘impicata’ (hanged), and calling for an official tribunal to be held against its usage in Italy. Its author, Gregorio Leti (1630-1701) was a historian and satirist from Milan, who sometimes published under the pseudonym Abbe’ Gualdi, known for his works about the Catholic Church, notably the Papacy. All his works were put on the Index of Prohibited Books. Text in Italian.
