Notes: William Jardine, The Natural History of the Pachydermes (Edinburgh: W. H. Lizars, 1836), pp. 248. 8vo. Fine binding in half green leather, spine divided into five compartments with gilt lettering and decoration, volume numbered V in Roman numerals on the spine (numbered according to its position in Jardine’s ‘Mammalia’ series as opposed to the Naturalist’s Library as a whole), spine slightly faded, slight foxing to pages, although the volume is otherwise in very good condition. Marbled paper on boards and end papers. Complete with illustrations: 30 plates (26 hand-coloured), 1 b/w title page, 1 b/w portrait (of Sir Hans Sloane). Plate II is loose. This plate, depicting ‘Elephant of India’, is not listed in the contents, so whether or not it was originally bound into the volume, or whether it was added after the volume was indexed, is difficult to determine. The lettering on the spine reads: ‘Naturalist’s Library: Mammalia: Vol. [number in Roman numerals]’.
