Fine binding in half green leather, spines divided into five compartments with gilt lettering and decoration, volumes numbered IX, XI, XII and XIV in Roman numerals on the spines (numbered according to their position in Jardine’s ornithological series, the intermediary volumes being dedicated to other kinds of bird; this is still a complete 4-volume set of the Birds of Great Britain and Ireland), spines slightly faded although the volume is otherwise in excellent condition, marbled paper on boards and end papers. Complete with illustrations: vol. 1: 34 hand-coloured plates (plate no. 34 appears opposite p. 66, not p. 303 as indicated in the contents), 1 b/w title page, 1 b/w portrait (of Robert Sibbald); vol. 2: 30 hand-coloured plates, 1 hand-coloured title page, 1 b/w portrait (of William Smellie); vol. 3: 34 hand-coloured plates, 1 hand-coloured title page, 1 b/w portrait (John Walker); vol. 4: 33 hand-coloured plates, 1 hand-coloured title page, 1 b/w portrait (of Alexander Wilson); the plates and the title pages are engraved and coloured after drawings by John Hope Stewart, a well-known and important naturalist illustrator in his day who contributed to a number of volumes in this series. The lettering on the spine reads: ‘Naturalist’s Library: Ornithology: Vol. [number in Roman numerals]’. The volumes are organised according to bird type as follows: vol. 1: Birds of Prey; vol. 2: Incessores; vol. 3: Rasores and Grallatores; vol. 4: Natatores; and the volumes were published in 1838, 1839, 1842 and 1843 respectively.
