Fine binding in half green leather, spine divided into five compartments with gilt lettering and decoration, volumes numbered III-IV in Roman numerals on the spine (numbered according to its position in Jardine’s ‘Mammalia’ series as opposed to the Naturalist’s Library as a whole), spine slightly faded but the binding is otherwise in very good condition. Slight foxing. Marbled paper on boards and end papers. Vol. 1 contains 33 plates (31 hand-coloured; 1 missing), 1 hand-coloured title page, 1 b/w frontispiece portrait (of Peter Camper). The tissue guard next to plate 23 is torn in the top inside corner with no loss of paper. Vol. 2 is complete with: 31 hand-coloured plates, i b/w title page, 1 b/w frontispiece portrait (of John Hunter). The lettering on the spine reads: ‘Naturalist’s Library: Mammalia: Vol. [number in Roman numerals]’.
