William Jardine, The Natural History of Nectariniadae or Sun-Birds (Edinburgh: W. H. Lizars, 1843), pp. 277. 8vo. Fine binding in half green leather, spine divided into five compartments with gilt lettering and decoration, volume numbered XIII in Roman numerals on the spine (numbered according to its position in Jardine’s ornithological series as opposed to the Naturalist’s Library as a whole), spine slightly faded although the volume is otherwise in excellent condition, marbled paper on boards and end papers. Complete with illustrations: 30 hand-coloured plates, 1 hand-coloured title page, 1 b/w portrait (of Francis Willughby); the plates engraved and coloured after drawings by John Hope Stewart, a well-known and important naturalist illustrator in his day who contributed to a number of volumes in this series. The lettering on the spine reads: ‘Naturalist’s Library: Ornithology: Vol. [number in Roman numerals]’. One of the more scarce volumes in Jardine’s ornithological series.
