Description

A Description of the First Discoveries of the Antient City of Herculaneum. Found Near Portici, A Seat of His Majesty the King of the Two Sicilies. Written in Italian by the Marquis Don Marcello di Venuti, translated into English. (To which are added letters etc.) Printed by Woodfall, London, dateless (1750). 8vo, disbound, pp. 110, (2) including publisher's ad. The title page has some small tears, one of which caused the loss of whatever word was written before the name of the publisher. Affected by foxing mainly in the first pages. A copy of the second English translation of an extremely rare and important work regarding the discovery of Herculaneum. Though dateless, we can easily tell it has been issued after 1748 by reading the text. In the preface there are notes regarding one only previous translation, few weeks after its Italian edition in London. Some bibliographies date it exactly 1750, two years after the first Italian edition. The work of Venuti has been partially forgotten, yet it was him who discovered the ancient city of Herculaneum, the town described by Cicero as one of the most influent of southern Italy, by finding its theatre in december 1738.
